This one simple sentence will make your colleagues laugh (Kommt Zeit, kommt Rat)

Let’s have some fun with this weird German language!

In this series of posts, I’ll show you how to make your German speaking colleagues laugh, with ONE simple sentence.

Kommt Zeit, kommt Rat

(Comes time, comes advice)

Do you remember when you were a young kid (als du ein Kind warst)?

You had so many questions (so viele Fragen), so many uncertainties.

And oftentimes, many of your questions (viele deiner Fragen) and uncertainties just resolved on their own with time (mit der Zeit), right?!

And that’s exactly what we mean when we say in German:

  • Kommt Zeit, kommt Rat

we mean:

  • Time will tell.
  • We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
  • In space cometh grace

Got it?!

So here’s your action step:

Imagine (Stell dir vor) your German-speaking colleague Hiltrud asked you:

“Should I look for a different job in 5 years?”

Smile at her (Lächel sie an) and say to her calmly:

  • Mach dir keine Sorgen jetzt. Kommt Zeit, kommt Rat! (Don’t worry now. Time will tell!)

And this is what it sounds like:
