“I’m not good at foreign languages”

Last time we talked about the “right” way of learning (see here) and I asked you to share with me personal examples where you learned something in a right-brain way in your life, —without consciously memorizing but still internalizing the knowledge.

You shared many great examples like these:

But, to be honest, I missed one significant example: learning your mother tongue.

Think about it: all of us have acquired our mother tongue without memorizing, without studying or drilling (see here).

Simply by internalizing it.

Today, let us dig deeper into the ideas of Prof. James J. Asher and his view on learning another language the “right” way vs the “traditional” way.

I’d like to share with you a rare interview he did a few years ago that will challenge many of your beliefs about language learning.

In the interview, you’ll learn:

  • How students come to the believe that they are not good in foreign languages
  • How the “old” way of teaching is harming students
  • Why traditional language schools still operate with a 19th-century model
  • The difference between how children and adults learn a language
  • Why adults will always outperform children if they learn on the right side of the brain
  • How the main problem relates to the brain: right-brain vs left-brain
  • What the left brain and right brain functions are
  • How our ingrained beliefs from school favor left-brain learning, even if it works against us
  • How to switch from the left-brain to the right-brain when learning

So don’t miss the interview and check it out here.
